Discover the three keys to managing your emotions in order to feel happy and fulfilled each day
- There is power in consciously focusing on what you want. Many people as they go through their day notice the things that are not perfect. Their focus begins to see more and more of what is wrong which in turn influences a part of the brain known as the Reticular Activating System. This is a real part of the brain that is always looking for something to focus on. And whatever you focus on, you will eventually manifest whether it be pleasing or upsetting. If you find yourself too often focusing on problems that make you feel bad here is a simple yet effective way to consistently shift your focus (and retrain your RAS). It is called "Pivoting". anytime you notice your are feeling stressed or frustrated, stop. Then look for anything at all that makes you feel better in that moment. It could be the weather, your spouse, your friends, a flower, a smile, remember a recent interaction that felt good to you. The point is to shift your focus to have an immediate impact on how you feel in that moment. Do this often enough and it becomes difficult to focus on negativity.
- Become aware of your habitual thoughts: Many people allow their thoughts to run rampant in the subconscious. Unaware of the huge impact those thoughts have on their quality of life. People are often critical of their past mistakes and habitually beat themselves up. (I have seen many cases of depression caused by this) . Since you cannot shut your brain off these thoughts cannot simply be stopped. But you can replace them. I have found the best way to do this is with positive affirmations. However, positive affirmations only work if you believe them to be true as you are saying them. So if you have a feeling that you are not good enough or unworthy in some way, saying to yourself, "I am enough" or "I am worthy" may not work or only work some of the time. Create affirmations that you believe are true and begin using them to counteract negative self thoughts in real time. You will be amazed at how easy and effective this is.
Become aware of the effects of linguistics on your emotional state. Often I hear people say, " I need to get this, that and this other thing done." When in reality they do not "Need to get them done". They WANT to get them done. Linguistically turning "Wants" into "Needs" is a recipe for disaster. So what are our needs? Air, food, water and sleep. That's it! EVERYTHING else is a want. But when we use the word "need"... we subconsciously make it into a life or death experience. All kinds of negative emotions come up especially overwhelm and procrastination which tend to lead to an ever increasing downward spiral. Be careful using the word need and be aware of this distinction and you will likely be more productive and more at peace as you go through your days.There is quite a bit of overlap in these three simple steps. It is intentional. It is said that the subconscious mind has about 80,000 thoughts each day. By utilizing the three simple steps, you can take control of the negatively oriented thought patterns and create new empowering patterns AND make them habitual. The effects are feeling happier and more fulfilled each day. And who doesn't want to feel happy? P.s.
